Overall job purpose

The role of the St. George’s International School Business Manager is to oversee the non-academic staff, manage and execute the day-to-day operational aspects, and provide essential support to ensure the smooth functioning of the school. As a key member of the School Leadership team, and reporting directly to the head of the school, the Business Manager plays a pivotal role in the effective and efficient operation of the school.

They will work alongside the Executive Head to provide commercial input into all aspects of the business, including identification of opportunities to drive efficiencies through the P&L cost lines.

The Business Manager promotes the highest standards of business ethics within the administrative functions of the school. They will promote high ethical standards and lead by example.

Business Manager

Main responsibilities:

Leadership and Operational management

  • Supervise and lead all the non-academic staff in the school, ensuring a cohesive and efficient team.
  • Support a culture of continuous improvement across the school’s operations, working to improve efficiency and effectiveness in all aspects of the school’s support services.
  • Provide finance support to the Executive Head & SLT to ensure the effective financial management of the school budgets and resources monitoring and administering all funds and accounts liaising closely with finance
  • Ensure that the Executive Head & SLT are kept reliably and accurately informed on all matters relating to H&S, building & premises and finance so they are able to perform their duty of care to the staff, pupils and families
  • Support improvements in the non-academic functions of the school in line with the School Development Plan per instruction from Head of School
  • Collaborate with various departments (both in school and head-office) to address operational challenges and implement solutions.
  • Support regional CEO, Executive Head and Finance Director with ad hoc tasks when required

Managing and monitoring budgets

  • Keep all income-generating activities under review to ensure maximum income and cost-effectiveness whilst delivering a premium product
  • To assist in executing the strategic financial plan which addresses the requirements of the school’s development plan
  • Effective reporting, forecasting and budgeting of school Other Income and Opex performance in line with Group deadlines and deliverables working closely with finance
  • In collaboration with the Finance Manager, produce and report on school’s profit and loss reporting and budgeting relating to Other Income and Opex
  • Manage costs and spend against budget through detailed phasing and communication of year to date spend against budget and planned spend to Executive Head

Premises and Health and Safety Management

  • Manage school facilities, ensuring a safe and conducive environment for learning
  • To oversee the management of health and safety, risk management and business continuity- ensuring that appropriate legislations and policies are adhered to as lead by Executive Head
  • Coordinate with maintenance staff and external vendors for facility repairs and improvements.
  • Procure and manage resources necessary for the school's daily operations.
  • To produce an annual premises plan, in conjunction with the Capex team, prioritising works for the short, medium and longer term;
  • Provide oversight and management of transport operations;
  • Take a lead role in updating and implementing fire safety training under direction of Executive Head
  • Ensure all policies are up to date and staff aware

Human Resources Management

  • Collaborate with the HR department to support staff recruitment, onboarding, and professional development.
  • Address HR-related issues in coordination with the HR department and the Head of the School.
  • Work with the HR Generalist on staffing restructures, consultations and other employee relations issues such as disciplines, capability and grievances.

Strategic Planning of Resources

  • Ensure the school makes the best possible use of resources through effective strategic planning, including consideration of all financial implications;
  • Collaborate with the Executive Head on long-term financial planning and growth strategies.
  • Explore and implement new ideas and approaches to generate additional income through marketing, new and current business links, sponsorship and other funding streams
  • Identify and pursue opportunities for business development to enhance the financial sustainability of the school.

Ideal candidate:

  • Proactive self-starter with the drive to deliver results.
  • Works with others in a collaborative and solutions focused manner to achieve measurable outcomes that improve business performance.
  • Resilient individual with the ability to operate in a demanding and fast-paced environment.
  • At least 5 years relevant experience in leading multi-disciplinary teams
  • Proven financial experience (analysis, budgeting and forecasting, reporting, etc.)
  • Knowledge and experience in Switzerland landscape (accounting, fiscal and social legislation, legal, etc.)
  • Strong people management experience and leadership skills
  • Community and Public Relations Responsibilities
  • Fluent in French and English
  • Experience of school environment is a plus
  • Experience in an international setting or having lived abroad is a plus
